Bio:
Cynthia Gooding was born in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1924, but discovered an interest in folk music in her late teens, after visiting Mexico, learning Spanish and studying guitar. Moving later to New York City, she began singing in Greenwich Village cabaret clubs. Holzman first came across Goodling when she captivated with the force of her impromptu performance at a typical New York folk community party. Gooding was a skilled interpreter of Spanish, Turkish and Mexican folk songs. She recorded three LPs for Elektra during 1953, including Sings Turkish And Spanish Folk Songs and Mexican Folksongs. These early recordings still have a tremendous sense of presence with her powerful voice and highly accomplished guitar work. Gooding helped open Elektra to world music and continued to record for the label during the 50’s.
